In 1859, provisions were written for a state university into the Wyandotte Constitution, under which Kansas became a state in 1861. Now we won’t get into the origins of the rivalry with Kansas State, the oldest public institution of higher learning in the state of Kansas, but The University of Kansas officially opened on September 12, 1866, with 26 girls and 29 boys as Old North College. It was one of the earliest public institutions of higher learning to admit women and men equally in the United States, which is awesome!
Old North College, the first building on the KU Campus, overlooked Lawrence and the Kansas River. The geographical site selected for the university and it’s first building was a hill known as Mount Oread. But originally it was known by another name... Hogback Ridge. (And we are super-happy that name DID NOT stick!)
