HOPEFUL CONCLUSION

TO A TRAGIC PRELUDE

Tragic Prelude by John Steuart Curry is located in the Kansas State Capitol in Topeka. It shows John Brown, an abolitionist, during the time called “Bleeding Kansas.” The symbolism this mural holds is something Kansas kids have been learning since we were very young. Public school field trips passed this amazing creation daily with mixed emotions. While many kids were focused on the McDonald’s lunch to highlight the field trip, we were focused on a hopeful conclusion.

Download the attached PDF coloring sheet for your kiddos provided by the Kansas Historical Society. Study the painting then match the description with the symbol that Curry used to represent his ideas. #blacklivesmatter
