First used in 1952, the term Tornado Alley referred to an area of the United States where tornadoes were most frequent. As a kid growing up in Kansas this referred to the period of time from early spring to late summer where you hoped and prayed for severe storms to take the “Tonganoxie Split” (we have a shirt for that) and not ruin your tree fort. Ha!

Ominous clouds, green skies, and wailing sirens were the stuff of nightmares and movie plots, but still very much part of life in the Midwest. So welcome to Kansas… Dorothy!
