BACKSTORY:

"The Big Train” – “Barney” – "The Big Swede” – Those are a few names the world chose to call Walter Perry Johnson as he became one of the greatest pitchers in baseball history. However here in Kansas he will always be known as, "The Humboldt Thunderbolt!”

Born in November of 1887 right here in Humboldt, Kansas, Walter Johnson played pro baseball for the Washington Senators for 21 seasons. He established numerous all-time records, some of which remain unbroken nine decades after he retired from the game. Steve Carlton, Nolan Ryan, Gaylord Perry, and Bob Gibson are a select few you might recognize that managed to best some of Walter’s amazing accomplishments on the diamond. Most impressively however is that #TheHumboldtThunderbolt was elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame as one of its “First Five” inaugural members in 1936. He joined Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Christy Mathewson, and Honus Wagner on the very first ballot. Not bad for a humble kid from Kansas.
